Teeth Cleaning

The bacteria in your mouth never take a day off. It is simply part of life that we need to maintain rigorous care of our teeth. Otherwise, our teeth can fall prey to decay. With professional teeth cleaning in El Cajon, we can set patients up with a foundation of oral health during each visit.

The Importance of Professional Teeth Cleaning

Brushing and flossing can keep your smile clean from day to day. But over time, bacteria can still leave buildup in those hard-to-reach places. Without professional cleaning, even tiny spots of buildup can eat away at your teeth, causing cavities and decay. Professional cleaning gives your smile a fresh start with each visit.

What Is a Teeth Cleaning Treatment Like?

Routine teeth cleaning tends to take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how involved it needs to be. If you have more buildup on your teeth, it can take a little longer. We gladly go the extra mile to make any accommodations and ensure your experience is comfortable and stress-free.

Step 1: Buildup Removal

Using a special tool, your dental hygienist will carefully remove any buildup from your teeth. These tools can effectively reach places that a brush or floss might struggle with. A skilled hygienist can complete this step with minimal discomfort, deftly scraping away buildup while avoiding irritating your gums.

Step 2: Ultrasonic Cleaning

Using vibrations and water, an ultrasonic cleaner further breaks up any buildup. This device further clears away any footholds that bacteria have gotten in your mouth. You will feel some vibration through your teeth, but it should not be uncomfortable.

Step 3: Gritty Toothpaste Cleaning

With the plaque and tartar removed, we can further scrub your teeth clean. Many patients report this part can feel like a massage for the teeth and gums. We apply a small amount of toothpaste to a rotating brush and apply it to your teeth.

Step 4: Flossing & Rinsing

The surfaces of your teeth are now fully clean, but we also need to take care of the spaces between your teeth. Your hygienist will floss between each tooth to ensure no debris remains between them. At the end of this step, you can take some time to rinse out your mouth before the final step.

Step 5: Fluoride Treatment

Lastly, we apply a fluoride solution to your teeth. This gives your teeth an advantage in the coming weeks, providing an extra line of defense against decay. However, avoid eating or drinking anything for about 30 minutes after treatment to let the fluoride fully settle into your teeth.
If you have any concerns or requests for your cleaning, do not hesitate to ask. We gladly take extra steps to accommodate all of our patients' needs.

How Often Do I Need Teeth Cleaning?

Most patients will need teeth cleaning only twice a year. Typically, your teeth cleaning will be part of your routine dental visits. However, some patients may require more (or less) frequent cleaning based on their oral health. For example, patients with gum disease may need 3 to 4 visits per year to improve their oral health.
Additionally, let us know if you experience any dental anxiety or discomfort during treatment. Many patients may postpone their routine care due to dental anxiety, which then puts their smile in jeopardy. Ask about our sedation dentistry options and how we can facilitate a stress-free visit for patients of any age.
