Dental Crowns

At times, a worn or decayed tooth might look like it is entirely beyond saving. But many patients are surprised they can still save even severely damaged teeth with dental crowns in El Cajon.
What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are teeth-shaped caps that our dentist can place over a damaged or worn tooth. Each crown is custom-made for each patient, ensuring a natural look that blends in with your smile. Crowns can be made from a range of quality materials, but porcelain ones tend to prove the most popular.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
Crowns are highly versatile, offering patients a range of benefits, including:
- Covering a tooth after a root canal
- Providing improved support for a weakened tooth
- Immediately enhancing the cosmetic appearance of a tooth
What Is the Process for Getting Dental Crowns?
Receiving your own dental crown can take two or three visits to our office. The process involves three main steps, though some can be combined in a single visit.
Step 1: The Consultation
The foundation of any medical procedure is the consultation. Dr. Mansour meets with each patient to fully assess their situation and discuss their expectations. If dental crowns are a good match, you can begin the process.
Step 2: Preparing the Tooth & Taking Impressions
The target tooth may need some work done first. This can range from a root canal to simply roughening the tooth to prepare it for the crown. After the tooth is ready, we take impressions. These we send to the lab where your crown will be manufactured. You may receive a temporary crown in the meantime.
Step 3: Placing and Cementing the Crown
When we receive the crown from the lab, you can return for the final step. Dr. Mansour will place the crown and ensure it fits well into your smile. If everything matches your expectations, he will permanently affix the crown to the tooth. From there, you can leave the office with your smile restored.
Dental crowns have a rich history. The first ones were gold dental crowns dating back to the second century.
Is it Right for Me?
Dental crowns can transform a smile, but you still want to make sure they are right for you. Firstly, patients will need a tooth that is strong enough to support the crown. Extreme decay or damage may require a tooth to just be removed and replaced. Additionally, you will need to take care of any decay or infections before moving forward with your crown. During the consultation, Dr. Mansour will take the time to match you with the best option.
Alternative options can include:
- Dental Bonding: A quick solution idea for improving the appearance and stability of mild to moderate dental concerns.
- Inlays or Onlays: More durable than bonding, inlays/onlays can repair teeth eaten away by decay.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?
Dental crowns can last about 5 to 15 years, depending on several factors. The two biggest factors are the material of the crown and how well a patient cares for it. Excellent dental hygiene, healthy habits, and avoiding injuries all can contribute to longer-lasting crowns. Additionally, only work with a dentist partnered with a respectable lab. The materials used in making the crown play a large role in determining how long it will last.
